Im lost Ford trans in old jeep..what is it?

Just got a 76 CJ5 with a 304. Got it for cheep!!! had a broken top plate on trans. It is stamped with a BIG ford emblem. RF E4TR 7006 AA is the ID but I can not figure out what it is. Has a chevy side t-case. Can someone tell me what this is or where I can get another top plate without geting another trans??

I've heard of people using a ford pickup Borg/Warner T-18 in your type of swap. Happen to be near Western Washington? I have an extra of these trans if that is what you have maybe I can help. Or try local wrecking yards, they usually have a pile of cores you can look through to find one that matches your top.

Good luck

T18's were used in both Fords and Jeeps, so that's probably it. Does it have Borg-Warner cast into the side of it?

It was probably swapped out. The T18 will bolt up to Ford and old AMC's. It was probably originally out of a Ford.

How much you want for that Jeep? I want one with a 304. Either that or a 401 engine. Any ideas? haha.

This transmission is not a T-18

E4TR-AA = E4TR-7003-AA .. Ford Top Shift Overdrive (RTS) Ford 4 speed

E4TZ-7222-A Housing, Gear Shifter (top plate)

NOTE: Visit a dealer and look at a diagram of this transmission to make sure you get the all parts you need to repair it.

Numberdummy, give us a clue as to what "ford top shift overdrive" means. What model trans is it exactly? My bet would be a ford case T18. It would be a swap in, due to ford case and T18's mated to 304's from the factory are very rare. The only mod to make the ford T-18 work is to swap the output shaft to a shorter one, and depending on case type maybe drilling/ tapping a few holes. My brother and I are both going to swap T-18's into our pair of CJ-5's for the super low granny first gear. We are also working on a hybrid 2.46:1 dana 20 made from parts and pieces of other dana cases. The jeep one ony had 2.00:1. Good luck with the jeep. I got my 5 for $150, did you beat me?

I'm sorry, but I can't give you much in the way of details. The book says it's a "Ford Top Shifter Overdrive 4 speed RTS."

I listed the various applications, and gave the parts listing and illustration pages, so maybe someone can look at those and tell more about what it is.

I can't scan and post because my 80/89 parts catalog is on microfiche.

i remember those transmissions. they are like a t-18, but instead of having a granny first gear, they are a 3 speed with overdrive where 4th should be.

I Payed $60 to a friend (for gass) to tow it 100 miles to my house. Found it collecting rust in coosbay. Told old man that it was my dream jeep and I wanted to restor it. It was siting on blocks in his back yard with no rear end and the engin in the back so eh gave it to me. I got it home and found out the engin had water in the everything!!! After I rebilt the engin I called the ford lot in roseberg OR and gave them the vin# off the trans and they could not tell me what it was. Smart yes? Got internet a few days ago, dont know much about it, then someone from "turbobuick.com" sent me here.

I think Ford called that RTS a TOD also. I'll see if I can dig up anything at work tomorrow.

yup! alminium case and shift tower...super-ceded the SROD (least me thinks), should also share the same trans code (B). happen to have the gear ratios for it?

I listed the Ford Truck transmission parts list: 70.9A

I listed the actual part you requested: E4TZ-7222-A .. Housing, gear shifter (top plate)

All you need to do, is go to your local dealer and give him the parts list number, explaining it's from the 1980-89 Ford Light Truck parts catalog. From that he can pull up the diagrams, you can pick out whatever else you need.

Note: Make no mention the trans is in a Jeep...no need to confuse the issue!
