The 8.8 isn't the front axle, regardless of the engine. There was never an 8.8 front axle in any truck that I'm aware of.
If you have the 4.0, you'll have the Dana 35. 3.0 and 2.3 usually had a Dana 35/28 Hybrid in these mid-'90's years, but sometimes these too had a Dana 35.

I stand corrected. I was thinking F150 as the 8.8 (among others) was used in the front. The following is a link that covers the various axles and their applications:
