Recently bought on ebay a used dash panal for my 64 F100. It is an interesting piece. It has the hazard flasher switch and red light indicator on the panal and also a push button to flash the runmniing lights so I suspect it is from a heavy truck. The speedometer /gauge cluster has a ammeter gauge and oil pressure gauge where the idiot lights are on my current cluster. Also has a device (looks like a signal generator) with heavy wires going to it. This screws on in between the speedomoter and the cable.
Questions: What is this device and what was it's use? The ammeter uses a pass thru wire so it would not hbe a problem to use it. The oil pressure gauge is electric. I would guess I would need to change senders to use this gauge. Correct?
If I recall the pressure sending unit and the dummy light sending unit are the same thread so just put a pressure in the place of the dummy light sending unit. Also I think the pressure sending unit was 25bucks (8 years ago). The guage cluster should have a voltage regulator atttched. If I recall the fuel guage has to tie through this but I am not sure if the oil pressure gauge does as well.
Your other device may be for a cruise control unit to recieve a signal?

I believe the device you are talking about is for the use of the overdrive in heavy trucks. I had the same dash cluster in my truck from a 64 f700. I am in the process of upgrading a replacement cluster to a custom guage setup.
Thanks for the info. I will find the pressure sender and it does have a voltage regulator on the back of the panal. Just take off the device on the speedo. Anybody know where I can get a wiring diagram for the dash of a 64 heavy truck? Thanks again!
All F series trucks (and cars) from 1959 or so have a CVR (constant voltage regulator) behind the cluster. This device regulates flow of electricity to the gas and temp guages.
After checking the book, there are only two types of CVR's used in 1961/66. The odd ball is for use on on a cab and windshield truck (school bus, for example). The standard CVR is the same one used for 40+ years in just about every Ford made:

Bill, do you have a part number for the oil pressure sender used with the gauge rather than the idiot light? I think all "P" series had the gauge or maybe it was all heavy series. Thanks.
Welcome popbreed to FTE!!
Sorry, not too sure about the 'signal generator device', as airharley noted, looks like could be part of overdrive, or 2 speed rear axle circuit.
Replaced dash in 65 F100 to dash which had different gauge configuration. Original had both mechanical, oil pressure line coming from engine, as well as idiot. Replacement cluster has an electrical oil pressure gauge. Could have used the wire from idiot light and ran it to the new oil pressure gauge, eliminating the idiot light, and only require replacing sending unit, larger type purchased at local Napa parts supply. Decided on both electrical gauge and idiot light so ran separate wire from sending unit to gauge. Still need to run short wire from CVR to guage. Also need to use an adapter off block for both sending units.
Replacement cluster also had an amp gauge and dispite having a wire diag could not figure the circuit out. Several months ago posted topic in 61-66 forum and w/ assistance from FTE member(s) finally hooked it up. There was an occasion where having both oil pressure gauges came in handy. With respect to amp gauge, even though I had reservations, like being to detect problem before hand.
Anyhow, had an urge to add my $.02 and again welcome.
The device between the speedo and the cable sounds like a CVR, as NumberDummy mentioned. The CVR mounts at the 6 o'clock position with one screw that goes through a slot in a plate welded to the front of the CVR (I have replaced two of these, can you tell?!?!?). It looks like a little aluminum casket for a roach or something, with three terminals on the back, two of which are actually the same piece of metal bent in a "u" (output). If it has the original wiring on it, one wire on the output will be orange (fuel guage). The back is some sort of cardboard or plastic stuff.
If it is a CVR, you best check it first. With the input lead connected to a hot wire, the output should oscillate between 0 and 6 volts. It seems odd that it oscillates, but that is what experience and the shop manual tells me. If you get 12 volts, it's bad...if you get no volts, it could be bad (there could always be a problem with the hotwire). I got mine from Autozone for about $20, and it is never in stock.
However, I speak only for a '64 F-100. If the thing doesn't look like I described, it could be some other something, like the overdrive thing.
Thanks Mark, I will check their web site.

Mark, appreciatre the link to the wiring schematics. I was able to print them out on 8 1/2 x 11 and they will help tons on the rewire for the new gauges.
Incidently from the schematics above,I was able to determine the "device" on the speedometer is for a 2 speed rear axle.
