Glow plug relay??

First let me say this is an absolute wonderfull site, I have been a Ford man all my life and that came from my dad who is the same way. I have a 93 F250 4x4 with 7.3 no turbo (still wishing).
Here is my delima, I am pretty sure but I think my glow plug relay may be toast, when I turn on the ignition the wait to start light comes on for about 1/2 second and then starts clicking, watching the interior light it goes along with it My truck now will not start if temps outside are under freezing so what do I do?
I know someone on here has ran across this a few times and can tell me, how hard is it too change out the relay if that is said problem?
Another thing is I had read on hear where I believe it was Dave S.that has his g/p's wired manual, how does that work and why?
Alright I will stop here, thanks for all your help and glad to be in such good company.
Rob

Well, first of all, Your controller may not be bad, if a few glow plugs die on you, then the controller will recognize this and stay on a shorter amount of time, in an effort to try and not burn your remaining 5-6 plugs up. Check to see if you have any bad glow plugs. If it is your controller, it isnt too hard to replace, Dave S. has a diagram in his gallery with the wiring. Lastly, there is a relay that turns your plugs on and off. There are two entities that can control them turning on and off. Those 2 entities are the controller, or YOU...lol If you want, you can just wire a push button in your cab, out to a relay that is connected to your battery (yellow) wire, and the GP wire. When you mash the button, your GP's turn on. You hold it for as long as you want, to warm them up, (usually 10 secs.) and release. Then crank her over. Chances are, your biological internal nervous system is less likely to fail than a glow plug controller. So a push button is more reliable...lol

If you take off the air cleaner the controler is located behind the air intake under a black plastic cover. It will just snap off BUT be carefull as one of the large terminals is a direct feed from the battery. Not hard to change. One other thing is sometimes the little black wire that is under one of the hold down screws gets a little corroded. This makes the contoler go bonkers also. I ran a separate ground from this bolt direct to the (-) on the battery. Never had a problem since for about 4 years now. I was changing controlers every 2 years before doing this.

I think the controller is fine, some of the glow plugs are bad.
Short cycling is a classic burnt out glow plug symptom.

My truck is an 86, which had the old style glow plug controller.
Nightmare to trouble shoot, lots of things to go wrong, expensive to fix and often failed by turning the glow plugs on when not needed and leaving them on till they fried.
I am very old school diesel, the glow plugs were all manual control when they first came out on equipment, some still are today.
I like being able to turn them on when needed, not use them when they are not needed.

You are absolutly correct Dave, I finally started checking the glow plugs after I had wrote that this morning and did find that 4 maybe 5 of the g/p's was not working at all.
I went to Autozone and bought all 8 new ones (they cary MotorCraft) came home and changed them out, now she works better than it has in years, turn switch on, light goes off, about 1 turn over and she came to life.
Thanks so much for your help.
