What model tranny is it???

I think most 5.4L's got the E40D, which i think is called the 4R100 like listed above. A few 5.4's got the 4r70w i think but most are the 4r100. Thats based on my observations though so im not 100 percent sure.

Oh really, well thanks for the info, guess ive just come across a lucky few..lol.. Do you know what option does come with the E40D... My dads screw has one and man is it tuff... i really like how smooth and stout the tranny is for as old as it is... the truck has 180000 on it and 90000+ are with a trailer towing 4-6 thousand pounds... and that thing has never acted up once. Tires, brakes, oil...new clutch packs in the rear end... cant belive the good luck hes had with it.

I think the 4R100 came out in '99 I know '97s have the E4OD because mine does and I am pretty sure '98s do to. It would make sense they came out in '99 since the SD's had them.
As said most 5.4L's after '98 had the 4R70's it seems you need at least the tow package and maybe more to possibly have a 4R100, and of course all the L's have 4R100 and SD 5.4L's. IIRC the 4R70 has a drain plug in the pan, the E4OD does not and I do not think the 4R100 does either. I want to say the E4OD/4R100 is the square pan and the 4R70 is kind of L shaped as well.

The 4R100 and E4OD are almost identical-there are a few very minor differences. All of thre aftermarket references call it an E4OD...same with them calling the 4R70W an AODE.
The 7700lb GVRW trucks all had the 4R100,and the heavier towing package 5.4L equipped trucks had it as well. From my references,the 5.4L equipped California trucks also had it since it was the only trans that was used for the CARB compliance testing,and I believe the Maryland or Massachusetts were also the same.
Not all 4R70W's had the drain plug-that was only the trucks that had the "fleet package" option-the rest all have a standard pan. I think you could get the same on the 4R100 in a "fleet package".
Either trans is pretty tough,but the 4R100 is alot more trans for towing and heavy load than the 4R70W is. The 4R70W uses a band for OD engagement,and the 4R100 uses a clutchpack. A clutchpack has alot more capacity,and less chance of failure-so towing in OD with a 4R100 is acceptable, whereas towing in OD with a 4R70W takes a bit of care and attention to load and how often it's hunting for a gear and how much it jumps in and out of TCC lockup.

Aight man thanks. I think ill buy in to that one... My dad has a towing package in his screw as well as do i. I also put 1000lbs add a leafs in the rear to help with my hauling... and ive noticed even with my springs my dads truck dosnt sag as bad as myne in the rear with a heavy load. I bet this is because he has a heavier towing package than I do... never knew ford did that ...
