In Chassis head removal

Stated in another thread-the back 2 head bolts cannot be removed with the motor in the truck. How much more clearance does one need to remove them, just as a guesstimate? My truck has 2 in. in body lift and it sure helped a stuffed engine compartment. I mean my hood is at top of shoulder level as it has 6-8 inches more lift in the suspension. I would like to think that I could do head gaskets in the truck, as engine removal is quite the ordeal with that tall of a truck. (see gallery)

Sure you can remove those head bolts with the motor in the truck. Loosen them up lift them up so they clear the block and put a rubber band on them so they can't slide back down in the block. Lift the head off. Try that...

What you are not going to believe is you can pull the engine, do the work you want and reinstall the engine in the same amount of time or less than you can do it in the truck.

It is so much easier to get a good job on the head gaskets standing on the ground than it is sitting under the hood of the truck. All the climbing up and down.

My 16 year old son and I pulled my 6.9 turbo, pulled the top of the engine off, replaced the head gaskets and valley pan gasket and reinstalled everything in under 20 hours a couple weeks ago. Fixed a couple exhaust leaks while it was out as well.

Took the radiator shell off so the engine did not have to go so high in the air to get it out. That also made the removal and reinstall so much easier. You could reach almost everything standing on the ground.

I agree with Dave pulling the engine is actually pretty easy compared to nose diving into the engine bay everytime you bend over the fender. My brother in law and myself call these weekend projects. Done quite a few where the bench tools are set for easy access. This is a great time to look things over when it is out.

For your truck since it has the body and suspension lift I would even just pull the fenders and inner fenders and walk into the engine bay it might be perfect height. Either way it is far better than standing on your head.
