Engine Weight?

Engine Weight?
My buddy and I are planning on pulling the engine out his F-250 in the next couple of weeks (420,000 miles - replacing it with a low mileage unit from a scrapper).
Our question is this - he has a hoist set up in his workshop that is rated at 1,500 lbs. Will this handle the weight of a 7.3L PSD with the manual transmission and xfer case still attached? Should we remove the tranny before pulling the engine? Anyone know what a PSD weighs?

I just switched engines in my f-350. The dealers claim long block is about 950lbs. With most of the other parts on I estimate about 1050 - 1100 lbs. Very heavy engine. I used a picker ranging 2 - 1/2 ton. I had to use the 1/2 ton to remove the engine to get it high enough to clear the front bumper. Once out use a 1 ton setting to move around or you will risk the unit toppling over. The front of the truck can be removed to get more acsess to the engine.

Well i would at least remove the transfercase if you want to. But if all you are doing is removing the engine, why the transmission too? It's just more to put back when you are reinstalling it. The engine itself weighs about 930 pounds, however the way you will be pulling it will make it more around 1000 pounds. You can remove the turbocharger, it will be alot easier to lift the engine higher to clear the wiper cowl with the top of the engine, as the oil pan hangs down behind the crossmember.

We were just going to pull the tranny and engine out together so that we could check on the tranny too, and maybe clean it up a little. Sounds like seperating the engine before lifting it out is the way to go.
Thanks for the info guys.
