Attached, a picture showing my R60S Racor Installation. The filter is mounted off my aluminium toolbox on the right fender. The Factory Filter has been removed giving me easier access to the top of the engine.
Three nice feature about this installation are:
1, I can visibly check for water thru the clear plastic bowl at the bottom of the filter
2, The filter provides much better filtration as it is 2 micron instead of the factory 10 micron.
3, The filter has a prime pump (Black Button) you can push to prime the new filter and lines so you don't have to do any craking to refill any new filter cartridge.
Note, I can either use the R45S element (that was used on the 94-97 powerstroke trucks) or as shown in the picture go to the larger R60S element. Since the price of the R60S element is only $2.00 more than the R45S element and gives you double the filter area and life I usually go with the large element.
Seb, thats the same racor I had on my 86.....I wish I had installed it on 84 before I lost the 86 due to the fire....it was installed on the 86 as a primary filter [drivers side] to the stock filter. But from what your are saying....the racor can replace the stock filter? What about the heating element in the stock setup?

Yes, this unit does everthing including filter to 2 micron and provide waterseparation so no need for keeping the factory filter set-up.
You could get a heating element in the bowl but I have found it uncessary with the weather we are having here in BC.
I am thinking of installing a fuel/glycold Heat exchanger now that I am running higher blends of biodiesel. The standard fuel heater just isn't powerful enough for Biodiesel.
Would it make sense to put this filter after the stocker? It wouldn't get plugged up as fast like that, would it?
Yes you could install it after the factory filte.
I don't think it would be necessary so. If you are worried that you have poor fuel and would plug up to quickly just go for the bigger filter element (R60S) The last R60S element I installed I kept for 50,000 kkm. No problems.
SEB, You say, "The filter is mounted off my aluminium toolbox on the right fender. The Factory Filter has been removed giving me easier access to the top ".... I see the picture, but I do not have one of these tool boxes, is this some thing you added?? must be. How can I?
these tool boxes, is this some thing you added?? must be. How can I?[/QUOTE]
Yes, I bolted a custom made aluminium box onto the free space on my passenger side fender. I keep some of my tools, rags, some spare parts, oil and fuel filters, hoses, Engine oil, Brake Fluid, etc.. in the box. You know the stuff you need all the time.
My dad had a box made by the local boat fabricator and it is just the handiest thing to have.
I have been running a R60S (big cousin of the R45S) ever since I bought my 93' F250 new in July 93'.
I changed my first injection pump and injectors at 250,000 km. The truck still ran fine and passed our emissions test without notable changes on opacity; however there was a "little" more notable smoke under full throttle and the biggest problem was the truck would stall when you came off the clutch to fast going downhill, not a pretty thing to have happen as you would loose your power brakes after the truck stalled.
I think the 2 micron Racor filters are worth it, although I installed mine in the pressure side after the fuel lift pump under the hood. I realize things are a lot tighter under the hood on the PS trucks so going the way you went under the frame is the best way to go.
Thanks again for the video. Looks like a simple and clean installation. I like it.
so either fuel filter setup, whats a good place to get them? Seb, any thoughts being a BC'er as well? wilson and proctor wants 160 for a comparable setup.
thats what i figured but i am seeing between 75 and 100 for the large filter kits but the one i was looking at is 160 locally so i will hit up some ebay!! thanks!
