Leaking from the front? Where the driveshaft attaches?

The pinon seal needs replacing, common on an older vehicle.

May need a speedy or jiffy sleeve with new seal if the yoke is groovy.

the leak looks to be coming from the front where the yoke goes in. any advise on repair because this is something that i've never been faced with. and whats the odds that there may be damage inside and what should i look for in looking for damage?

If the rig has been sitting a while than most likely the pinion rusted and took out the seal. That's good and easy to fix. 1.5 inch socket and a 1/2 inch air gun should do it. Worst case is that one of the two pinion brg,s has gone south and a new seal wont fix it. Ya will have to overhaul the deff. I just put all new brgs and seals in my 3/4 ton(both ring and pinion) in a day. And that was not hurrying but having the knowledge and the tools. Good luck.
PS: If ya can move the yoke up down sideways after removing the driveline than ya got a brg out.

Putting in a new pinion seal is so easy a caveman could do it.

You won't have a trouble
