i have a 89 f 150 5.0 when its cold it misses a little once it runs a couple of minutes it gets worse then while driving it feels k]like a dead cylinder and when it shifts into passing gear or downshifting its slamming gears that is how bad its missing i have tuned it up and checked wires for 7-8 can it be a dirty or bad injector or plunem gasket the truck has been run out of gas several times
Have you pulled the plugs and looked at each of them?? if it's missfiring that bad you should be able to tell by looking at the plugs. the shifting problem is probably a result of the engine not running right and confusing the computer. what kind of transmission do you have?? running truck completely out of gas is not good on the fuel pump but shouldn't have anything to do with what's going on with motor.
e40d trans i am going to pull the plugs to see which cylinder is not firing some people say that it could be the plunem gasket i just bought the truck i want to check the timing what color is the wire on the fender that you un hook i have a single yellow with a blue or green tracer
don't have book to tell you about the wire for timing, i'm at work. an air leak on the intake could be part of the problem. that's easy to check for. you can use a can of WD40 or even starter fluid and spray around the intake while running and if there's an air leak the motor will change revs when the wd40 or starter fluid gets sucked in.
since you have ran it out of gas reciently I would check your fuel pressure. If it is too low you may have a plugged filter or a plugged pump pickup screen. I don't know off hand what the fuel pressure should be but the dealer or your hanyes manual should tell you.
Otherwise just check everything else these other guys have suggested.
if your haveing sloppy shifting and sluggish responce, your torque converter could be haveing issues, or you need to change your tranny fluid and filter.
