I don't know if I would go as far as to say "better", but it will vary less and it will probably be about the same as your getting now depending on the conditions. What are you getting now?? You can look at the mileage poll at the top (if it's still there) but the V10 should yeild about 8-10 towing, 10-12 in town, and 12-14 on the road. of course there are extremes on the low side and the high side but I think you'll find most of us here in that range.
I never owned a 5.4 SD, Mine have been the 6.8, and both with the 4.30 final gearing. I wonder, though, if the 5.4 is getting a bad rap due to it's gearing? How many 5.4's out there with the 4.30? It might be a pretty good puller if it had the gearing, after all they do advertise it as 300 hp.
Maybe, 4wd - but with both trucks the same - the V10 is not going to labor as much. More cylinders mean more fuel, but then UP!! Jumps the monkey!!! and the weight of the truck is not as much of a factor due to those two extra pistons.
Yep, it sems like the V10 does not have to work as hard as the V8 due to the extra power....but it does have 2 additional cylinders that want gas....
My mileage is right in line with that stated above, and I know several RVers that have the 5.4 V8...thier mileage is about like mine, unless they have a huge RV...then they get worse but 1-2 mpg, and can't pull the hills as well.
For a daily driver the 5.4 seems to be ok....my son has the Dodge 3/4 ton with the Hemi...it does about like the 5.4 Fords on a day to day basis. Every time he pulls my 10000 pound 5th wheel, he complains that he needs more power.
For a lot of towing, the V10 is the better way to go. I don't tow a whole lot, and I drive the V10 every day...would not trade it for a V8 or a diesel...just my opinion.
I get 12-12.5 average out of my V10. A guy I work w/ has an 01 F250 4x4 w/ 3.73's and he get's 13-14 average. It's not enough of a difference to me when you drive them side by side. I'll take power over 2 more mpg's any day.
