We've all seen the adds in Diesel Power about folks using the FS2500, and getting 15, 20, even 30,000 miles between oil changes. Does anyone here have one, and do you think it's worth the initial $450 cost? I was told by a reputable source that the bypass filter elements absorb A LOT of the additive pack in your oil so basically your engine is running on pure oil, no additives to cushion anything. Looking for advice!
I really do like what they sell. I was once told that "bypass filters" in general use the "toilet paper roll" type filter and suck up the add pack. From what I read about the FS2500 in the above link, I think I might got that route. Once money goes to me, and not bills....
The extended oil changes can only be done if your used oil analysis report says that the oil is still in good shape. From the UOA reports that I've seen on other forums that people have posted, the additive packages still looked ok and uneffected by the extra filtration. You'd be ok with your 7.3L, but the 6.0L's have more shearing because of the fuel injectors and would probably need to change their oil on the regular maintenance schedule.
Three years ago I bought a 1992 GMC 3500HD with a utility bed. The truck has a 454 gas engine, auto transmission, and weighs in at 12,000lbs with my tools on it. I switched it over to amsoil when I bought it using their 15w-40 diesel oil and their oil filters and air filter. It had 115,000 miles on it when I bought it and it now has 290,000 miles on it. I change the oil every 25,000 miles and the oil filter at 12,500 miles. Two oil changes ago I switched to their 20w-50 since it was starting to use a little oil and I change the oil at 15,000 miles now since the 20w-50 isn't rated for the 25,000 mile oil changes if you are a severe service driver. It uses a quart every 1,000 miles or so and I have never done an oil analysis on it. At 240,000 miles I replaced the timing chain and the pan gasket and the inside of the engine was remarkably clean.
