Flashing sensor light

Dear Gang,

Thank you for your replies on my first post. I have an 1997 E350 V10 4x4--it weighs about 9000 pounds. The guy at the transmission shop says that I need to keep the overdrive off unless I'm on really level terrain as this is what causes transmissions to fail prematurely. This doesn't make sense to me as I know a lot of people with the same vehicle as I have and they don't have this problem and I know that they don't ever turn their overdrive off unless they are towing. Did leaving the overdrive on cause my transmission to fail prematurely? I was also told that the torque converter locks up in 3rd gear, so wouldn't this also cause excessive heat or slippage? Do I really need to keep the overdrive off all the time? My trouble code is P1728. Does this mean that I need a new transmission? I'm sorry that I don't know what the temperature was when the transmission overheated as I just put the temperature gauge on.

Do the external transmission filters work? Are they a good investment or not? I was checking one out on The Diesel Stop for about $175.00. It's supposed to have a bypass valve built into it so if the filter ever clogs it keeps working.

What would you recommend for an inexpensive Code Reader that I could purchase that would read all the Ford codes?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I leave my 1999 F-250 V-10 4X4 in overdrive all the time. Only time I turn it off is when I plow snow, Tow or when the tranny kicks down when headed into a strong wind. Tranny has never heated up.
