Starter Problem

Fellas, I need some help. My truck (74f100,3602bbl) has been parked a few weeks and I can't get the starter to catch the flywheel. I tapped on it with a hammer thinking it was stuck, but no luck. Looks like oil leaked onto the starter. It will catch about every 25 tries, otherwise just spins. Really a tight spot to get to and I get home from work in the dark. It used to grind every once in a while, but always started. Any quick suggestions? Thanks Gentlemen.

Replace it or

Remove it ..clean up the starter drive and lube with grease...bench test (engage it) it a few times then re-install it.

I like to use a real light grease like white lithium so it does not get sticky in the winter time.

If there is an oil leak, and it been leaking on the starter, this is not good on the amature and winding within the starter, as well as the bendix. Fix the oil leak that is leaking onto the starter or other starter will malfunction due to oil getting into starter housing.

Remove the transmission inspection plate and check all the teeth on flywheel for worn or broken teeth.

R&R starter.
