Question oil pump engine code j or w

Hi
Yes another oil pump question!
I have a 1998 Ford f-150 4.6 l 4x2 ext cab.
When running from a hurricane last year I got stranded in central florida, going down the highway my oil light came on.
I heard no noise and shut down the engine...I sat for a few min. the started it back up..it was fine for about 20 miles or so, well to make a long story short I made it to a dealership told them my problem, they hooked up a oil pressure gauge and said i had 5 lbs oil pressure,I said can we replace the oil pump...the mech. said let me try something else..they proceeded to flush out my engine and replaced the oil and filter.
The new oil pressure reading on their gauge was then 22 lbs....he said that may get me home if I wanted to try it. I did and made it home with no more problems and here about eight months later I still have not had a repeat of that problem..but I have not went any farther the 50 miles at the time(skeered it might do it again) Anyhow my question is I bought an oil pump and all the related gaskets to change it, BUT I since then am suffering from a pinched nerve in my neck and cant change it myself.
I talked to a mech. today and asked how much it would cost me...he looked it up and asked me what engine code my truck had...I told him W is what it says in the vin #....he said that it didnt show the pump going on the front of the engine with that code....the pump I bought is for the front of the engine over the crankshaft. What I need to know...is he correct or not? Will my pump go on the front or do I just have to pull the oil pan? Sorry for not knowing alot about these new engines...ask me about a 302 from days gone by and I can help you out!
