Chassis number question

I need to restamp my chassis number, what is actually stamped? is it the complete serial # or the production code? my 53 had the Volare front end graft and there is no Chassis number to be seen at all, thanks for any info.

The best that I remember from reading here, the frame number is a production code unique to that one particular vehicle. Here in the states altering the number or removing it is a violation of our laws. Some states in the U.S. will assign a new vin# and give you a tag to attach to the frame, stamping your own number, here, may not be legal. If you have not already done so, I would recommend a check with your state's motor vehicle registration office for guidance.

Others here are much more knowledgeable on this subject than I am and may be able to give you more specific information on the number sequence and if the year is part of the code.
