I've got a couple problems, blowback, need a lift for my oversize tires, loud engine and a few other stalling-when-i-reverse-problems.
Blowback- I'm getting some major oil gas mixture in my air filter. I changed one bank of plugs (the other has the air supply in the way). I think as a result the gas smell dissipated a little, but that could be mental. Either way every air filter i have goes black after two weeks. I have yet to change the oil to a thicker kind and add lucas, but aside from that is there any thing I can do short of a ring job? Also can I let the PCV valve empty somewhere else, aka jury rig it? As far as ring jobs go, I only have 107k miles on this, is it worth it to fork out money for a ring job?
Lift- Is there any way to add just a little bit lift so that my tires aren't rubing on the wheel well when I turn? I was thinking like two inches and 400 dollars is the best deal i can find. i've got 31x10.5
Loud engine- Easist way to describe this. A guy asked me if I had a diesel. Some say its a leaky manifold, others a leaky air hose. Since there is a 100 dollar difference there some input would be nice.
Stalling in reverse- Every time I reverse too fast the RPMs drop below 500 and sometimes it stalls, sometimes it doesn't. Ideas? I've already clean the IAC.
Also for some reason my defroster turns on my A/C which sucks about 200 rpms of power. Is this normal?
ok, on blowback, do a compression test, find out if it's a cylinder thats messed up, or if something else. It could be either rings or bad piston .I had sort of the same problem back with my 302, had a big hole-in-piston problem found out and did a 351 swap.
Lift question....if you're looking for just something to clear the 31's, get a wheel with more backspacing (only an inch or two), you dont need a lift. My dad's truck is running 31x10.50s on stock height 93 F150....and im running 275/75's (around 32") on my 87 with no lift.....but if you're looking for bigger in the future, go for lift (four inch or bigger?)
loud engine, if you're talking about exhaust, start looking for leaks in the pipe and the exhaust system....
do some looking around before you start throwing money at the problem.
your reverse problem might be because of whatever is causing your blowby....mine would shudder and die in reverse, as well as in drive if i didnt ease into it with the bad 302.
The ac/defroster is not a problem. It is normal. The system runs the ac to get the humidity out of the air so that it can defog the inside of the windows.
Those tires should fit fine. If not, you may want to look into getting a new set of coil springs, as yours may be sagged out. They are easy to replace and not too expensive, about $100/set.
Thanks guys. I'm just doing a "what to look for" thing here. But I'll try these things out.
Another thing i have to take into account, is I have the more aggressive cam, with the nite. (at least that what i've been told) and its just a farm truck, how hard is it to find that 302? I'd just do a straight swap, or rebuild this one. Of course if I rebuilt it I'd look pretty stuipid trying ot figure it out, but I'm I eventually get there.

I dont know how hard it would be to find that nite version, but an easy way to do it is get a good 302 and if you still want that more aggressive cam, just take it out of yours, and put it in the other engine..
when i had my problem, i ran about 15 or so feet of fuel line to the back of the truck from the breather tube on the oil filler neck.. You could do that, but just to remind you, blowby is a sign of a bad problem, so be prepared for anything.
Yeah I am, but I have no money. However i can get this truck to get on chuggin along is what I'm gonna do. Otherwise I can't find an oily spot anywhere.
Seriously> Somebody told me that the Nite package from 91 came with rollor lifer therefore a more aggressive cam. If not then I'll dig up another 302 somewhere... Do you suppose they'll ship the exact same engine but brand new? This is the first truck I ever bought if that explains my attachment...
with the defroster/ac since its winter. you can unplug a wire running to the ac pump to keep it from ingaging the ac pump. my ac pump went out and i still needed my defrosters so i tried that and it worked. give that a try if you
