Question what does this mean

i was trying to go up an icy hill, not moving, just keeping the old 3oo at high rpm, ( i had my head out the window trying not to spin rear tires, to no avail) then i look ahead, i see steam coming out of every opening from the front end, so i immediatly throw it in park pop the hood, and the coolant is boiling out of the overflow resevoir, so i shut it off and let it sit til everything settled down, so i take it home tempertature is staying some what down and let it idle, i come back to put coolant in it, take of cap to reservoir and its full, i grap the top radiator hose-empty, i shut off the engine which is now running at a high temp and grapped the hose again empty,
now, i think that it needs a new thermostat now cause the old one may be stuck closed, that could be why coolant is not flowing, what do you guys think
thanks

take the cap off of the radiator, then start it and let it get up to temperature, you should be able to see the coolant moving when/if the thermostat opens.
