Guys,
I have a 95 F150 with a 351 that has 133000 on it. It looks as if the rear seal is gone. Should I bite the bullet and get the engine rebuilt when the rear seal is replaced? Cause every once and a while when I start it up. It will have a puff of blue smoke, then stop and be normal.......
A rebuild is entirely up to you. If in is not consuming lots of oil I would replace the rear seal (and oil pump once you have the oil pan off). The smoke on start up is caused by bad valve stem seals. Replacing them is not a hard job.
I agree with Mantta, the rear seal really isn't that bad of a job. It was my first 'real' mechanic project (89' F250 7.5/460). I got it done last month with no major issues, and with a lot of good tips from this forum. Just make sure its your real seal before you start.
I think it's too early for your vehicle to get a rebuild though, unless it's been ragged on. It even surprises me your rear seal is gone already.
I agree with the other people. I would just change the rear main, and if you are concerned with the periodic smoking issue, change the valve seals, it is not too hard of a job. There are tools available for doing it without removing the heads. Otherwise you can pull the heads and have a machine shop take care of it along with a valve job.
133000 you shouldn't have any other problems as long as you have kept up with oil changes and such.
