Won't Shift into 3rd
I have a 1984 F150, with a 4.9L and C4 transmission. When cold it will not shift into 3rd. After warming up it will shift into 3rd but then it will drop back and forth from 2nd to 3rd, like a bouncing pin pong ball. I've change the modulator which didn't help. Fluid has good color and doesn't smell burnt. Any ideas?

Okay double checked and have 11 pan bolts, which confirms a C4 is that correct? Also checked the fluid and it does have a burnt smell. Going to try and drop the oil pan this weekend, change the oil and filter. Anything I should look for while I have the pan off? If tranny replacement is nescessary, I was planning on getting a C6 from Autozone or another parts store. Are these part store transmissions okay? And will the C6 fit with the 300?
