Hello..
I have a 2000 F150 that is DEAD! There is NO power to anything. I attempted to hook-up to a horse trailer today (as I have done a million times) I hooked-up, plugged in the lights and brakes and tried to start the truck. I heard one click then ALL power shut down. When I say it's DEAD I mean DEAD! I checked all fuses in the dash and under the hood... they are good. Any suggestions on what the problem is and how to fix it?!? Thanks.
Do you have a test light or voltmeter? You'll need to check for power at the starter relay on the firewall. From the positive battery terminal you have a red cable going down to the starter and a red wire going to the starter relay. You should have 12V at the red wire where it attaches to the starter relay. If you don't then you either have a bad battery connection like galaxie mentioned, a dead battery like Joe said or possibly a blown fusible link in the red wire. A fusible link works like a fuse but instead of being an actual fuse it's a piece of wire that's made to burn out if there's a short.
Also check the negative battery terminal connection to make sure it's clean and tight.
My '97 F150 did the same thing. It turned out to be the starter. The starter and solenoid are conected together. There is a a thick copper wire that goes from one to the other that seems to corrode on them easily. With that ground gone....a lot of bad things can happen.
It would be great if it was just the battery, but if jumper cables don't get you anything, I would doubt it's the battery.
