I was very nervous but went ahead and bought the Edge.
First response was favorable but still guarded - in other words, was it worth the price?
Yes it did make my truck more responsive - No it did not turn it into a formula1 truck.
I have had it now for over 6 months and I guess I like it enough...
The monitoring it does,(i.e. trans fluid temp, engine coolant temp, etc) are certainly valuable additions, and one could spend a couple hundred bucks just to get that.
I do not mess with "custom tunes" I leave it on level 2 and I like the way that wakes up my truck.
I love the display and the fact that I can monitor my drive train better than the little stock gauges.
Worth the price? - I don't know.... I've blown more and got less.
I have had non-stock equipment on several of my vehicles without any problems. I have an Edge on my FX4 now and it is great! But I had one vehicle that had a small lift on it ( 2" ) and when a suspension problem with a stock part came up the dealer and zone rep refused to warranty it because of the lift. They stated the lift added additional stress to the part ( this was a name brand lift highly recommended ). So if you change any stock part there is the chance, however small, that it could cause you to experience warranty problems. Just from my experience.
I love the Volant, I think it made a nice improvement in a few ways:
-It sounds much deeper than stock, you get a nice deep growl at lower RPM's and you can really hear it when you rev the truck out
-I would say it woke the truck up more in the mid-speed range (20-60 mph), but throttle response off the line is definitely better
-nice clean install, and it's not too expensive. (I got mine for ~270 with free shipping from AutoAnything.com)
I don't think it does much for shift points, but the slight changes in engine performance (seat-of-the-pants meter) might make you feel like the tranny has been improved somewhat as well. I also have a Bassani exhaust which was already on the truck before I installed the Volant, so I can tell what improvements came from the CAI. IMO, you can't go wrong with it!
I always recommend a custom tuner, like the BamaChips Xcalibrator 2. It costs a few bucks more than the edge, but it is able to access ALL areas of the PCM to make adjustments. You wont be getting a canned tune for every truck with your PCM code, you get tunes specifically tailored to your truck, with the mods you have, using the octane you want to use and serving a specific purpose.
As far as intakes, the best is the JLT, but it requires a custom tuner like the Xcalibrator 2 to adjust the MAF readings. The edge cant do this. Without a custom tuner, I always recommend the Volant or AEM Brute Force.
Bob Jusnes- You stated in one of your posts here that the dealer has to prove that the modification caused the failure before he can deny warranty claims. Sounds good, but in reality the dealer does not have to "prove" anything. They just deny the claim based on the fact that some modification caused the problem, in their opinion. Then it's up to you, as the consumer to either convince the dealer or Ford Motor Company that the mod did not cause the problem (good luck), or take them to court. Guess who has lots of lawyers on retainer. And the company that manufactured the product (like Edge, for example) will say "Thanks for your money, too bad your truck broke, must have been something you did wrong, see ya!".
I've got a tip for you guys, until it's out of warranty leave it alone, or as one astute observer here stated "You gotta pay to play!"
While I agree the burden of proof is always ours, you can bet that if any tuner from any company out there was causing problems it would be posted all over this site and every other on the web.
The general consensus is pretty positive.
But if you're the one in 100 that has the issue, the general consensus really does not matter. Also, I've have read about issues with the Edge right here on FTE. Let me put it this way, my truck is 100% stock and I've got 34K trouble free miles, but then I'm cheap and risk adverse.
I am hoping to get a few more responses from guys who have had the edge for a while and any issues or problems with the dealer when going in for service. Having searched the net for edge problems I got a lot of hits with people with problem hedges. All kidding aside not being overly rich I hesitate this mod more than the intake and exhaust. Beside pulling a womens shoe outta you know where for voiding the warantee naw I won't go there. Bob had a good take but I a few more experiences with this would be great.
I heard a lot of good reviews on the Edge so I finally decided to purchase one even though I had reservations about voiding my warranty.
So I ordered one and received it the other day.
The installation and set up was easy but since it was late in the evening I decided to leave it in the stock program and check it out further the next day. I drove it around the block and the MPH and RPM matched the trucks speedo and tach pretty closely.
Drove it the next day and it ran fine. In the evening decided to check out the Trans Only Program. Mistake #2. As soon as I drove out of the driveway I got alerts on the dash (service engine soon and electronic throttle control, per manual). Pulled back in the driveway and did Edge diagnostics…got P0605, PCM Processor ROM Error and P2133 Throttle Position Circuit High Input. Nice!! Never had problems before.
Put it back to stock. Drove it around, everything cleared.
OK, maybe I did something wrong?? Went through the steps again, same thing.
Well since I have a $35,000 Truck and a $300 piece of crap screwing something up, I pulled the crap off, put it back in the box and now it will be collecting dust in the garage until I can get in touch with Edge Products. Of course this all happens on a weekend.
When I do talk to Edge Products at this point I’m not sure I feel comfortable putting it back on.
I’m open to suggestions and/or comments…
Sorry this is so long but I’m a little upset and venting a little.
I have had my EDGE Evoloution since they were first released for the 04+ F150. I ran it for 10,000+ miles on my 04 and it is installed on my 06 F150 screw for more than 3,000 miles. I run level 2 with no customizations for everyday driving and it works fine for me. As far as it hurting anything on the truck, I say you are much more likely to harm your engine with an aftermarket intake than you are to hurt it with a tuner. Replacement intakes can push the A/F ratios way lean and that can quickly damage an engine. Some people do have problems with the EDGE like some of those previously mentioned. Something to keep in mind is that no matter whose tuner you are thinking about buying, all of them have had problems, no matter which one you are talking about. For my application the EDGE is the best bang for the buck.
It will be interesting to hear what the edge folks tell you as soon as you can get with them. I assume that will be tomorrow (Monday) Please let me know. With issues like this (although it seems rare) based on all the positive comments on this forum it does make me reluctant to do the tuner on a $38,000 truck. I was thinking of maybe just doing the CAI until I read the post from kd4crs right after your post. Now I am nervous about CAIs.
I think i am going to talk to a certified Ford Mechanic before I do anything further.
Bob,
Above you mention the Volant and the AEM. Are you saying that both of those are safe and you have verified that they do not cause a lean condition. I would assume that you would include the K&N product in this category as well.
Thanks,
FTO
