I've never timed a 5.0, but point the light at the crank pulley and see what jumps out at you. The plug that you're talking about is the SPOUT - SPark OUTput. It's what disables the computer-controlled ignition timing. It's a small grey plug that you can find in the wiring harness coming out of the distributor. Once you see it, it will be obvious to you.

Just went thru this with my 91 f150....like andym said it is a single connector...mine also was grey in color next to the connector for the TFI module on the distributor...have to unplug it before setting base timing....
