Do you have to seperate the tranny from the engine to replace the torque converter? Also, what is a reasonable price for an upgraded TC? I do alot of pulling and pushing with my truck. I've been doing some checking on rebuilt tranny prices. $3,200.00 from Pheonixtransmissions.com, this is an upgraded trans. most of the tc's i've been pricing are right around $900.00 or so. So i figure if i'm going to spend that much on a tc i may just as well get a new upgraded tranny for alittle more. what do u guys think? all comments are welcome. Thanks Rob.
The general consensus around here is to stay FAR FAR AWAY from Phoenix Transmissions. I have read many posts on this site that pertain to problems with the products they sell. I am also in the process of replacing my transmission. BTS (Brian's Truck Shop) and Suncoast seem to be highly regarded around here. Check them out. As far as a reasonable price for an upgraded TC - expect to pay between $1000 and $1400 for a solid triple-disc unit.
You may want to Stay away from pheonix transmission. Search this site to see what others have experienced with them. Check out Brians Truck Shop (BTS) for the best tranny for our trucks.
Yes, the tranny needs to be removed from the engine to gain access to the TC. If you need step by step instructions for removal let us know but it's pretty straight forward job. Be sure to flush the trans cooler or maybe upgrade to a lager one.
Lots of bad reports on Phoenix. It seems to all be true, too. They actually have to keep changing their name to stay ahead of their bad reputation and possibly to evade lawsuits. I'm just guessing on the reasons they keep changing their name. I don't know for sure. Maybe it's to be able to avoid having to honor warranties. At any rate they are very suspect and putting a new tranny in your truck is no place to take a chance like that. I would say you are better off trying to search out a local tranny rebuilder and pick his brain about what kind of upgrades he would perform on your particular year truck and tranny and see if it lines up with what you can easily discover on this forum with two hours of search time. Everyone of these trannies needs some type of upgrade when rebuilt. The newer they are the less they need. Some of the stuff has already been done inside. For around $1,150 you can get a Monster-Box tranny rebuild kit and drop it off with your tranny and get it installed by a local tranny rebuilder that you come to believe in. It will come with the necessary components to upgrade your particular unit and most good, REPUTABLE shops can rebuild these units. After all they have been a problem since day one and all tranny shops have had them arrive needing repair and rebuilding all along for the last 15 years. Try to find a shop with an older rebuilder guy in the back who has been there for 20 years. It's especially good if he drives a Ford truck(any size) with an automatic in it. If you can afford to just plunk down the money and go with a Bryan's unit everyone raves about them. You can virtually forget about future tranny problems. You'll just need to have a good cooler and do regular periodic tranny services and no more tranny problems, ever.
Thanks guys for the input. I will forget about Pheonix. I will check into Brians truck shop. As far as a trusting tranny guy locally, yet to find one, theis town is full of idiots. Thanks again. I really like this forum.
