Kickdown System Problem, I think ??

I have a bronco with a 460 in it. I am somewhat familar with the motor but dont know much about the tranny. So i have been having problems with the truck. It will idle perfect in park but as soon as i put it in gear it loads up with fuel and dies/backfires. I followed my at kickdown rod to the tranny and it seems that the stud comming out of the tranny is sheared off. I can pull on the rod, connetcted to the stud with the nut, and it slides out of the shaft in out of the transmission. I am not familar with this system HELP?! Thanks

I believe there is supposed to be a nut that holds that linkage on the inside of the tranny, so it must have fallen off. There is also linkage on the inside of the tranny connected to that same rod that may no longer be attached now that the rod has been pulled out of the tranny. I think you may be able to fix this by dropping the pan and the valve body. You should find the nut inside there somewhere as well. It would be a good idea to get yourself a manual for your transission before you start this job to familiarize yourself with the job at hand. You can ID your tranny by the shape of the tranny pan usually, look on this site for information on ID'ing your tranny:
