I have a 76 F-250 4x4, 360 4speed truck. I like the 4 speed as a work tranny, but i'm going to to mostly using ths truck now as a daily driver. I'm not worried about ultra heavy duty or anything like that, but i was wondering what auto tranny options there are. What auto transmissions were available in these trucks? Are there any overdrive trannys that bolt to a FE block factory?
To my knowledge there aren't any OD trannies that bolt to FE motors. gear vendors(and others) make aftermarket overdrives but I'm not 100% about your application.
as far as i know, the c6 is the only automatic that came in your truck. and with the divorced transfer case, it should be fairly easy to swap one in. it is not an overdrive trans but they are pretty strong, even stock, which would be fine for what u r doing. just find a truck like yours with an auto and take what u need. i believe summit sells a bracket to mount on your trans and u can run your shifter through ur floor (like the hot rods do) and u wont even have to swap steering columns.
Thanks for that aod website-it's a bit pricy for now but will be good eventually.
As far as the swap, application, etc.
I have a 70 f-100 body(original 2x4) I swapped onto a 76 f-250.
It took me from a very worn i6/auto/2wd/4wheel non-pwered drum/manual steering to a v8/4speed/4x4/front power discs.
I like having the stick sometimes, but i've owned auto full size trucks before (85 f-250) and I think i'll leave my stick shift for my 280z
Anyway - i already have the column, linkages, floor cover to do the swap. Time to start junkyardin
