Explain Backspacing

Could someone please explain backspacing for me. I have just added the 2.5" auto spring kit and will be looking to put on larger tires. I currently have the Chrome Addition 18" stock wheels.

I will probably stick with them for several reasons:
- Cost of new wheels
- 2wd Screw Lariat w/6.5' box
(occasional Home Depot or Lowes trip but mainly a grocery getter)
- I do no offroading
- Loss in mpg if I go with too large a tire and wheel package.
- Just want to fill the fender wells so a little larger tire should do the trick.

Also, does anyone no the width of the above wheel? I think I had seen somewhere in another thread that it was 7.5". Does this width limit tire size as some have said in other threads.

Your 18" wheel is 7.5" wide.
