Hello all,
I just finished rebuilding my 1973 360 engine, and i need some help on getting a carbertor for it. i orginally had a 2 bbl carb on it but i wanted to put a 4 bbl on it so i got an intake manifold from a salvage yard and got it all put together and now i need to get a carb for it and have no idea where to start. I was talking to a friend of mine and he said that i would need a spacer for it but i don't know. So heres the question what carb should i put on it? Also i was looking on ebay (LOL) and i see cfm whats that? whats double pump? theres so many varablies on there which i don't know what they mean so i need some help.
First, look at your new intake. If the four holes are the same, you need a "square bore" four barrel carb. If they are notably different in size, you need a "spread bore" carb.
Double pumpers have accellerator pumps for the primary and secondary venturis. These are for racing purposes, very UNeconomical.
CFM is cubic feet per minute, which is the maximum airflow the carb is capable of flowing.
For ordinary use, a 550 or 600 cfm carb is all you will require.
I would suggest that you only consider carbs with vacuum operated secondary venturis. The throttle response it good and the tuning is less difficult and they are usually more economical.
If you look at holley carbs, they will specify if it comes with the Ford automatic kickdown lever. I'm not sure about other brands. The kickdown linkage is basicly a rod that goes from your carb to your transmission. It moves along with the throttle to let the transmission known to downshift when you put your foot into the accelerator heavy.
OOOOHHHHHHH,
Because my previos carb must not of had that because it didn't like shifting down to much. so what if my tranny dosne't have that linkage i don't think it does it is hard to add?
If it does need the linkage, its not hard to add. It's just a rod that hooks up to a lever on the tranny and goes to a lever on the carb. There are some guys in here that will be able to help you out more. I don't know what transmission would be in your truck. Somebody will chime in that will be able to tell you.
Holley and Edelbrock are both good carbs. I normally use Holley, because thats what I'm used to. Either way you go, will work fine. I don't know if I would trust buying a carb on ebay. Are you talking used or new in the box?
EDIT: You will notice that this carb has an electric choke. If you're truck currently has a manual choke, I would still suggest getting an electric choke. They're easy to hook up and adjust, and make life easier for you.
