Well I had a heck of a time getting the PCM back in after switching out the cable and when I turned the key on, the display didn't do it's usual flash and stop on a number..It won't light up and the truck is not starting. When I removed the duct tape where the ribbon strip was, it pulled the ribbon cable out, the chip came off the board with it. I checked the connections where it plugs into the main board and it is kinda flemsy and the only thing holding it on is duct tape but I guess that is the way it is supposed to be. I put the shielded cable on the little chip and inserted the chip back into the box...fought like the devil getting it back in and when I went to start it up....it turns over but the display won't light up....I know I am going to have to fight it AGAIN and pull the box out, but is there anything I should look for as far as getting the chip correctly installed in the PCM or the cable...One would think it is idiot proof but it would seem that this time it kicked me right in the jewels....again....I am hoping that maybe it just reverted to NO START and before I have to take the box out again, maybe figure out how to get it out of NO Start...not sure how todo that but I would like to try that first. I removed the switch box and reinstalled it onto the cable with no luck....any suggestions of how to get it out of NO START???
I just redid mine this afternoon. I dremeled a small hole in the back of the plastic PCM holder so the cable comes straight out. I would venture a guess that the plug got pulled out and it is defaulted to position 0 (no start, if you got that).

I cut a slot where the cable can be bent around and taped to the side of the box. As easy as the chip came off of the connection inside the box, I would hope that there would be more secure method of keeping the chip and cable from pulling out from the box? I will fight it tomorrow when I get home from work and see....I guess I will pull the box out and double check the connection of the chip to the main board, reconnect the chip to the board and reconnect the cable to the chip...how would you get it out of NO START? I would really like to try that method first before I fight it again.....any tips??
If the switch is not doing its power on light dance the cable has come unpluged at the chip or has been cut. Once you get it plugged in or fixed the switch should go back to the last used position. There is a button procedure to get the switch out of default. I'll post it in a bit.
She still no lights up....I guess Im gonna have to rip it all out and check to make sure that the chip is not making good connection. When I did plug it into the main board in the CPM it did seem to connect "not square" to the outside of the metal box. It went on fine, but it just seemed to go on crooked. I didn't pay any attention to the way it came out cause it just kinda fell out when I tried to pull the duct tape off. When I removed the duct tape it came out with it. I then put the new cable on and put it in the metal box. I put it on and took it off a couple of times and the conectons seem clean like where he cleaned them and there was no dirt on them but it just didn't seem to go on straight. And as for the duct tape....I just don't have much confidence in that being the sole way to hold the chip in.....I appreciate all the help and I will rip it out tomorrow evening and try it again...
If that don't fix it, I will put it back together without screwing stuff down and try the old cable...I drove it today with the old cable so I know it works....and as a last resort....box up the whole shooting match and send it north...but I hope we get it straightened out before then...I need it for Daytona!!
sounds like your having a ruff day..sorry thing are not working out..i just got my wire yesterday and opend it just a few minutes ago...it has a prety hard caseing over it..did you cut the caseing around the computer so that the wire will run strait out of the box??? or are you trying to put the hard caseing around the wire into the computer??? im thinking you are trying to bend it to go around the computer then taping it there..if thats the case then with the hard case around the wire..it might be trying to slip out of the computer and it will pull and un plug the chip..im not sure how it go's in yet i havent done it with this wire yet..but it looks to me the caseing around the wire cant go into the computer and make a bend like that..so it will half to be comming out kind of strait..or maybe the caseing around the wire doesnt go into the computer..just the wires at the end thats sticking out..is there enouph to do that?? just a thought and maybe it can help me
Yeah your most likely right. I was just concerned that the chip would pull loose so easily. Alothough pushing the metal box back into the plastic housing should in theory help keep the chip pushed into the metal box...in other words, help keep the cable shoved toward the front of the truck. I did have a bit of a time getting the top 7mm screw restarted and when I first shoved the box back into place the weather protectant plastic gromet pushed out from the firewall. I got it back and the connector went back pretty easily...guess at this point next time is when I try to fire it up...gonna be after dark tomorrow night when I get home from work if it aint freezin....next day off is friday and I can't wait that long....need to get the coolant filter installed....another delima I can see it comin!! Thanks for all the help....just needed to hear it's not the end of the world, but I can see it!!
the chip does slide in and out easly..i noticed that when i put mine in...it wouldnt take much to knock it out of place..let me know how you make out..i may do mine tomarrow after the oil and trany fluied change..i havent had a problem yet but figured i got it.. mights well put it in..why take a chance..good luck my friend..dont give up..some times a break is all you need to make things go better...
That's odd. I had a chip, realised a mistake, got a second chip, and both were very tight to get on. I was wondering to myself why tape was even needed.
So my gut says, especially with the crooked part, its not on all the way. But I guess all the different trucks out there, some are going to just naturally be more snug than others.

if you clean it really good it will fall off pretty easily.
I got my cable in the mail the other day, had to go to the website to find out why (haven't been around here much, if it's been discussed). Maybe we'll see if it helps this weekend...
When I pulled the tape off from the flat ribbon strip, I evendently pulled the connection off from the chip. Well I (all without removing the back of the silver box) removed the chip and looked at it and said to myself I said..."Self..that chip does a lot" and put it back onto the board in the box...(notice the simple terms...board..box....cable....) Anyway, I put the chip back onto the board and plugged the round cable back into the chip. Now it does set pointed upward at a slight angle but that is just the chip. When I wrapped the cable around and taped it onto the silver box, it must have pulled away from the connection JUST ENOUGH that it was not making connection, therefore I didn't get the light dance on powerup. Well now that I have had it out several times, it is relatively easy...When I took it out sunday night, the cable was floppidly loose in the box so I HAD to take the cover off the box to see what happened, and sure enough it had come disconnected. I put it back on the chip and installed the side panel on the box and made sure to tape it securely and not pull loose from the chip. Put it all together and WEEEEEEEEEEEEE makin' smoke once again. Thanks for all the help and suggestions to get this problem solved....Have a great week everyone......Dave
