Is it possible to drop a diesel engine into a 1994 Explorer? I know the super duty diesel is too big but what about other diesel engines? What would this involve?
You'll squish it. The front end just wasn't designed to handle that much weight. If you did manage to find a diesel that was light enough, I suspect the power output would be so low that you wouldn't want to live with it. Maybe, maybe a 6.9L with or without a turbo, but I think those are still porkers, and proably way too big for the engine bay. Or find another light pickup with a 4 cylinder diesel (probably not Ford), that might work. But there again, no power.
Now if you want to hop up the 4.0L that's in there, we can help. If you want to put a 302 in there, we can help. Diesel? Probably not.
Try to find a 4 cylinder Cuumins 3.9L 4BT from a delivery truck as they will fit but will weigh a bit more than your 4.0. The 6BT is too long and way too much in length and weight. So is the 6.9-7.3-6.0 IH.
I MIGHT be referring to the same engine as RichS2659, and my apologies if I am, but the four banger diesel out of a UPS style truck would be perfect...I remember seeing someone who did this swap into a Ranger a while back.
