i was wondering if just replacing the stock muffler on my 2004 screw with 5.4 with a sido magnaflow muffler would impove the power and mileage just a little and give a decent sound, don't really want it loud in the cab,any help would be appreciated thanx
It would depend on the diameter of the pipe coming from the muffler and the types of bends. I think the aftermarket systems are 3" pipes all the way through (I could be wrong, maybe 2.5" - either way they are larger diameter than stock). So from cat back, you get larger piping into a better muffler, with larger piping out the rear, mandrel bent (no kinks - smoother airflow). The option you mentioned is probably cheaper and will probably give you some improvement, but maybe not as much as a true aftermarket cat-back system.
My SIDO system was custom built at my local shop. It is a 3"inlet with 2 2 1/2" out. All the pipes are mandrel bent and hung in factory locations, The entire system is welded instead of clamps. There is a big difference in performance and sound. I went with a Flowmaster 50 series. It is quiet in the cab but has a nice mellow rumble at idle. Any competent shop should be able to build you a system like this for about $200 less than a bolt on system ordered from a company. I believe there are pics in my gallery but if there isn't E-mail me and I'll send you some. This is the second truck I have had the shop do for me. They are fantastic and they can do anything I want them to do. Custom tips, custom exit locations, SS, aluminum, steel, whatever I want. All my Exhaust work is done there. Total price on my system was about $280. I didn't have to crawl under my truck and I know it was done right. All I had to do was stand there and watch them. There are pics of the other system in my gallery also.
I had my stock muffler cut off and a magnaflow welded in. I bought a SS 18" PN 14263 for 70.00 and 70.00 for local shop to weld in. Performance gains, not sure if there were any, but sound is great. A nice rumble when you start it, mellow around town, and a nice bark when you step on it. BWEP
Do you get a drone in the can at highway speeds with the 50 series? I've got 40's on my 97 Cobra. When I had the tailpipes on I hardly noticed them, with dumps and at 2000 rpm I sooner not be in the car.
I had 40's on my Expedition. I know what you mean by drone at 2000 RPM's! You didn't even want to be in the truck! With the 50 I get no drone at all! I tow often and the RPM stays right at 2000-2300. I am very satisfied with the setup. You can hear it in the cab when you get on it, but at highway speed it is gone!
Buddy of mine as 40 series on his Silverado, and can't stand the drone around town. Not bad on the highway.
As far as cost goes, I just checked the price on my Bassani stainless steel SISO exhaust, up to $671 now. I love the way it sounds and it went together real well, but I would be forced to consider the option you guys talk about now. Only I have to find a shop I trust...
