My truck is a 99.5 f250 sd with 76k miles. I have done the itp regulated return, will be doing a itp pretank, fleetguard oil bypass and ford A.I.S. intake very soon(all in garage).
This is my first diesel (bought it 4months ago) for towing my 7500lb TT. I believe my auto transmission is running to warm. While towing in 50 degree weather in sept it was running close to 220 degrees. The previous owner put in amsoil tranny fluid and I am going to change it to Schaeffers tranny fluid as soon I figure out what to do to get my temps down. The truck is stock besides above upgrades. I will be doing a high flow muffler on the stock system(running 400 for egt while towing) and a dp-tuner this spring with the 60hp tow and 80 econo. I would really appreciate any help of any kind. Not sure if I should add a tranny cooler, replace the one I have, get an aluminum deep pan, or what.? Thanks for helping a newbie. Tom
I wouldn't start adding coolers until I found the problem, that is definatly too hot. When it's that hot do the lines going to the cooler on front feel hot? I'm going to agree on checking the bypass on the side of the transmission. One last question, what are the temps when running around town without pulling the trailer.
Joe
Joe and Ron,
Thanks for responding and hopefully you can share more on this bypass. Where is it, any links to pics sorry but I am not too familiar with tranny's. Joe my temps around town without the tow in 20 degree weather some stop and go some highway would be just over 140 after about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. Thanks Tom

Just throwin this against the wall, but, When truck is cold does your tranny guage read cold? I am wondering if tranny guage is not calibrated. Have you had any puking episodes(backing up trailer, and fluid is expelled from the overflo) I would think you would have an episode ike this if tranny was that hot.
have you smelled your tranny fluid, does it smell burnt(it should if it is getting that hot as a DD and a tow beast) looked at it, it should be a nice red color not brownish or black
Pastor Mike had a similar episode with this kinds of temps and it was his Bypass.
Look on the passengerside of the tranny, there is a tube running from th eoutput to the return right up next to the tranny. It is supposed to close when cold to let the tranny warm faster. When they fail the stick open and always allow the fluid to bypass the cooler.

B- the guage is at its lowest point and takes a while before it actually starts reading a temp. Also I have had no episodes with the tranny puking nor have I ever smelled the fluid. No leaks at all. Thanks Tom
