Alright I have a 01 F250 5.4 4x4. Truck has 82,000 on it and has been pretty well taken care of. Now for my problem
When under medium to hard acceleration the 2-3 upshift slips and shakes the truck and makes a rattling noise. It also seems as if the tourqe converter "locks up" in 2nd gear. I accelerates then seems to quit slipping in 2nd. Anyone have these problems?

you have a 4r100 which is not a bad unit. the sliping you are feeling is from the clutches starting to fail. the chatter sounds like it may possibly be the convertor clutch also starting to fail.
may i ask if you are the first owner? if not do you have any idea of how the unit was driven and serviced? what gears are in the diffs? 3:73? 4:10? or 4:30?
yes i agree the 5.4 is just enough power to move the truck. a super duty at 7k plus or minus pounds should have only the v10 or psd motors for power.
the trans thou we as normal people don't have xray eyes to see inside the case and say yes it's this or that. we need to address it with more of a hands on check out. and to be better informed you will need to find a good shop near your home in KY and have a proper check out done there.
my personal gut feeling is clutches and a tc or a rebuild in gental mens terms. as to parts we can supply you with all the parts needed for a diyself in stage 1 stock, 2 red disc or stage 3 blue disc kits and a very good shop manual. you can check our web site for more information.
please don't say last ford as after a good stronger rb. lower gearing to 4:30's if you don't have them. and some speed parts it will do you much better.
Has a simlar problem in my 01 5.4 F250. It was a COP going bad. Only did it under a slight load. I swore it was a transmission prolem but thank God it was not.
After doing alot of mechanic work I know it IS the tranny. Changed fluid and filter in it this weekend only to find "perfect" fluid. No shiny stuff and the fluid smelled fine. Another Q though. I also installed a Autometer trany temp sensor. Trans runs 105 F. according to it. Double checked with my Raytek temp gun Sender was 104 pan temp was 98. This was after a 45+ mile trip up and down hills.
The truck had basically never pulled a trailer before I got it 3,000 miles ago. The service was all performed by our local ford dealer on time. I have a good friend that let me browse it's service record before buying it. Basically it was an old mans truck that used it just to drive.
Honestly there's absolutely no reason for the trans to be having clutch failure at this point in its life.
The 2nd gear slip acts exactly as if the torque converter is locking up. And it does it every time at a seems like programmed point depending upon acceleration.
