water temp gauge?

how accurate is the gauge? Its in the 30s here in Texas and while driving the needle is on the "L" of NORMAL. When I stop, it drops back to the "M". I remember a while back when I had a '93 Taurus SHO, the temp. gauge always read high. I don't think it's running hot because the heater is only blowing luke warm air...and why is that happening. Could the thermostat be stuck open?

Thanks.

Rob

you could be low on coolant, which would cause the motor to run warm and your heater to not blow really hot air

1) Check your coolant level
2) Thermostat is cheap and easy to install, replace.
3) Get a mechanical Water temp gauge. The current Electrical gauge is just a dummy light. A mechanical gauge will give you a better reading as far as true temp. Very easy installation. I went with Equus brand and am very happy with them.

It turns out that I had air in the system. I changed the thermostat, but unfortunately I was putting the rad. cap on before the thermostat had opened. Then as far as the heater goes, the heater core was clogged. I removed both lines and flushed it in both directions with a water hose and now it works like a champ. Gotta love easy fixes!

Excellent! I would still install a real gauge...it could be a life saver (the engine, not yours) in the future!

After many member's suggustion I installed good mechanical oil and water temp gauges. Not reconnecting the originals will force you to watch the new ones and, for the first time, you will know the status of your engine before it it too late to save it if something fails.
