Losing tranny fluid...
I've got a '93 XLT with a 4.9L with a manual transmission. Great running truck, although as of late, I've been having to top off the tranny master cylinder every 2-3 weeks or so. The clutch starts to go a little soft, so I know to top it off. I'm guessing the slave cylinder is on its way out. There doesn't seem to be a leak anywhere else. Is it possible for the slave cylinder to be leaking slowly?? I would think, because it's inside the bell housing, that it would inevitably cause big problems if it decides to fail big time. I've got a date with my father-in-law to change the slave cylinder come spring time. Should I do this sooner than that?? Are there any other possibilities as to where the leak is??
Thank you all in advance!!
If you are having to add fluid every few day's it's a slow leak. But the resevour dosen't hold much.
If you are wanting to check for leaks. Make sure the system is full of fluid. If you can find a dry spot to park the truck do so then pump the clutch pedal and look under the truck. This sounds like a slow leak. May be hard to find....
Sooner is better on replacing though. I would think that the leak would be most likely in the cylnder in the transmission. Could wipe the bottom of bell housing and watch for a drip to come out from the bottom.
The Hydrolic clitch in the bell housing is a pain in the butt to change. But you'll need it.
