Oh I forgot...I don't think they used ton ratings as much as they did Gross Vehicle Weight, which makes ton ratings harder to determine on big trucks.

bhs-bob I tend to agree with you. I think it is a 2 ton also from all the info I have received. It does not have a two speed rear axle. Why would Ford destroy those records? Sure is a shame. I bought the truck from the neighbor of the original owner in Dodge City, Ks. The truck has 71,000 original miles on it, rust free, original paint, all gages are in working order except for the oil pressure gage which needs a sending unit. This is on order. From what I was told, it has never had a brake job. The truck was outfitted with a home made dump flat bed and pto. All in good working order. The truck was originally purchased with out any bed at all. The original owner was a farmer that used the truck to haul grain. Each night it was stored in a barn. The frame has been beefed up considerably to support the weight while dumping. Weather the farmer changed the tire size or not is any body's guess. However the guy I got it from did not do anything to the truck as he has several others and runs a small hot rod restoration shop. As always, I appreciate all your help. Thanks, Bob.

bhs-bob I guess finding out the ton rating on an older truck using the information supplied back then, may prove difficult if not inpossible but thanks for trying. Bob.

Bob-
Sounds like your truck is in good shape, hard to find a truck that old that is in such good original shape. By the way, check out eBay.com for stuff for your truck. I see 1942 big truck owner's manuals listed from time to time. Put 1942 Ford into the search option, you may just find some neat '42 goodies. Good luck with your truck.

bhs-bob Thanks. Yes it is in good shape. A lot better then my 1946 1 ton. The 42 is a little bigger then what I wanted but couldn't pass up the price. Will check out eBay for a manual as you suggested. Again thanks for your help. If I don't talk to you before, have a great holiday season. Bob.

serial number code cipher

hi,
I am new to the old truck world. And the only thing I have helped rebuild was a 67 Mustang Fastback which is my hubs..
Now I get my 46 truck. yippee
I was glad to read about where to fine the vin numbers.
I was hoping you could help me with mine.
I found on the frame the following number; *99C-660252*

Then right in front of the stick shift on the clutch plate is this number; 81A-7222

The only problem I am having is the cab is a 46, but the truck bed and rear fenders are possibley a 48 or newer.

So which do I have?? Does the bed go with the frame or does the cab??
I do know all numbers seems to match with the tranny and engine. They all have the number 59 or 59A.
At least I assume that is what that number stands for anyway.
I wish I could use the original engine, but it is toast. The odometer read 92,472 miles on it. And the old truck was given to me..What a find.

Thank you for any information you can give.
Melinda

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-May-02 AT 01:07 AM (EST)]Melinda, congrats on getting your truck! The VIN you gave breaks down like this:
9-this number should be 69, which would mean 8 cylinder truck
9C- 1/2 ton pickup
660252-is just the consecutive unit number

I said the first 2 numbers should be 69, simply because for '46 trucks the 6 would indicate '46. But, I have seen them w/o the 6.

The cab goes with the frame it sounds like.

The 81A-7222 is a part number, and isn't any kind of serial number.

The rear fenders on a '46 will be a tear drop shape, the '48's went to a more square fender. The bed itself was the same until mid '50 I believe. If you need a picture of a '46 and it's rear fender let me know and I can email you a pic of it.

Hopefully you'll find some of this info helpful.

I just aquired two 1/2 ton pickups.
The serial number on the better one is 7IGC368700.
What is it?
