I could ( and probably will) go out & look but it's COLD out there....
What transmition do I have in my 97 Expedition XLT 4x4 ?
The OD off light came on & stays on. Everything seems to be working normal, it still shifts into OD & everything. What do I need to check?
Read the TRANS code off your door label then look it up using this site's resources (Articles/specs above).
If you have an OD light, you should have a fault code stored. Have your codes read using a scan tool capable of reading manufacturer's specific codes (the el-cheapos can't do this).
The computer can and does identify some out of parameter operations long before the fault causes drivability issues. It is in your best interest to get the symptom identified early as some conditions, if left untreated, will cause further damage.
Think of it this way, if you identify a suspicious mass in your own body but have no other symptoms, wouldn't it make sense to find out what is wrong sooner rather than too late?
Checked the button at the end of your shifter lever?? On my '01 the OD OFF light comes on and stays on once you've pushed the button. It is supposedly a towing function. The small black button on the end there is easy to miss...

Yup checked the button first thing. If I push it I can shut off the OD but when I engage the OD again, the light stays on.
Was out yesterday but didn't get the code off the door.
