fan removal

Sorry for such a basic question here but Im having trouble removing my fan. 87 6.9 cant get the fan removed. Do they have reversed threads? Whats the best wrench to use. I have been using a pipe wrench with a cheater bar but the pulleys slip and Ive removed a yard of hide from my knuckles. Hopefully someone (probly dave S with his engine pulling experience) has a quick easy suggestion that im over lokking.

Thanks for your help

You can buy the tools lot of places on line and tool supplies the threads are left handed.. reverse.. one wrench goes around the 4 bolts that hole the pully on the other goes on the fan nut..

If you're trying to remove it clutch and all (BIG nut between the fan clutch and water pump) the nut turns clockwise to remove it. I used a 15" crescent wrench to get mine off.

If you are trying to remove just the fan (4 or 5 bolts holding fan to clutch) those are normal thread and turn counter clockwise to remove.

I have the tools but I find that they really don't work well in the engine bay. I have done two so far and both of them could not be freed attached to the engine.

The one tool surrounds the 4 bolts that hold the pulley onto the water pump, the other goes over the big nut of the clutch fan. There is too much play on the pulley, and I would assume that the nut has seized on making the job impossible.

You could try torching the nut, but you run the risk of damaging the clutch fluid, unless it is seized, in which you wont care. Once cooled try penetrating oil to loosen it. There usually is lock-tite applied so the heat helps break the seal, then the oil might help.

In my case, I have never been able to do it. I had to take out the rad, then the whole fan-clutch, and water pump out. Then on the bench where two people can work together, break it free. It is a left hand thread (just a reminder). It's a real pain!

Good luck.

WOW! Guess I got pretty lucky on mine! I made sure all the belts were good and tight (to hold the pulley stationary), put the crescent on it, gave the handle a good smack sideways with the palm of my hand, and it broke right loose.

I did forget to mention that I had to unbolt the fan from the clutch to get it out with the radiator and fan shroud in place. I decided that was easier than removing the fan shroud - since I was replacing the clutch and had to unbolt it from the fan anyway.

You can use a piece of wood to jam in the pulleys to help it stop from spinning, lol.

Add a little heat from a torch to the nut, channel locks spin mine right off with one hand.

A little red lock tite and it don't have to be on gorilla tight to stay on.

When I did mine, I had to use a brass drift and a 3# hammer to firmly tap the nut on the right side of the flat, several times around the diameter of the nut. It finally broke loose and was easy to finish taking off.

i guess i got lucky when i found the snap-on fan clutch wrench set at a yard sale, new in the sealed box, for $45.

it works great, and has saved the live of many knuckles, and small animals from getting hit by thrown wrenches and the like when those saved knuckles did not get mashed into something.
