[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Oct-02 AT 07:26 PM (EST)]Congratulations on acquiring a neat old pickup and welcome to FTE.
A vin prefix of 799C would be a 1947 1/2 Ton pickup with a 239 flathead V8. They had a 114" wheelbase, 4700 GVW, rearend ratios of 3.54 (standard), or options of 3.78 and 4.11 Trucks came in 5 colors - Greenfield Green, Medium Luster Black, Light Moonstone Gray, Modern blue and Vermillion (red). Enjoy!
Hi. thanks alot for the info. I haven't decided if i'm going to restore it or customize it yet, it all depends on if I can get the flathead to run. thanks again..... Tom
When you said the engine has some water in it, were you talking about the cooling passages where it's supposed to be, or in the oil pan where it shouldn't?
Just be aware many of these old truck were parked when the engine finally gave out. Sometimes you get lucky and locate one that just got put out to pasture because the owner wanted something newer and is in fine shape.
General process is to tear it all down, have it hot tanked/degreased, magnafluxed by a shop familiar with flatheads and if it comes out OK then you have a treasure. Keep the flathead if at all possible, but talk to as many guys as you can and avoid common mistakes that will cost you later. Here's some forums that might be additional help.
