New guy old truck

I just registered and figured I'd introduce myself. My parents have the truck but I will probably buy it from them when they finally replace it. For now I'm just trying to get some work done on it and this is a pretty good resource. The truck is an '86 F-250 extended cab 4x4 HD XLT explorer lariat with a 6.9 and a 4 speed with just a hair under 100k miles. Mom and dad bought it in 91 from the original owner and it went camping a few times but mostly hauls wood and garbage these days. For now I was just wondering a few things about the truck like towing capacity and what was included in the packages that year?

The rated towing capacity for every 80-86 Ford truck is on the driver door panel sticker. It is unique to each truck built according to the installed factory options.

I knew I saw it somewhere no wonder I couldn't find it in the books or websites I thought it was in.

Never mind then it's not what I was thinking of. I know that is on there and is 8800lbs. If the truck wasn't 400 miles away I guess I could go check on that. I didn't think the GVW included towing capacity(wouldn't that be GCWR I can't remember that) if it is then the truck can't tow as much as mom's Toyota Highlander.

Yup! my bad! (GVWR)
I know for a fact the old 6.9's got a fifth wheel hitch installed on them when they got older and were used to haul cattle and horses here in Texas. Only single and dual horses mind you, but that is a lot more than hauling another truck on a trailer.

They're a pretty good puller, just don't expect to pull anything heavy at a high rate of speed.

What part of Idaho you in? by your location I'm guessing Moscow area.

Yeah I'm going to school at UI but I'm from W. Washington. I kinda figured it would be a decent truck that I could afford and it has low miles and is in pretty good shape. Plus the girlfriend likes horse so I'll probably have to tow around a 2 horse trailer plus my boat(of course my corolla handled that) i figured a turbo kit, brake upgrade and a gear splitter would make it a great truck and be a fun project for me if I ever get some spare time and money.

Chuckle....
Let me see....a 20+ year old three ton truck hauling another six ton load should not be in competition with a Lexus on the turnpike.

Those old non turbo 6.9's are tough and will do the speed limit hauling a load. Sure there is better now, but how good will they be 20+ years from now?

If your 6.9 has any blow-by now, don't even think about putting a turbo kit on that truck. It will be a waste of money, take my word for it.

Thanks guys. I'll put the 6 tons behind the lexus then it'll be a more even race. I figure in 20 years I'll either be able to afford something better, we'll have hover trucks, or we won't be able to afford to drive anyway so the horses will be transportation. How many horses would it take to pull a F-250? As far as I know the truck is sound but I'll check things thoroughly before actually spending significant money on it.

Instead of dropping the cash on a gear splitter, swap a 5spd in. More cost effective IMO.
