So I might have found a late 40's ish mercury truck up in northern alberta. Looks in prety good shape and all, but Im curious is there a way to tell the year by the grill? I have seen a grill picture before to tell the different years apart on the ford trucks, and was curious if anyone has one for merc ones.
oh man........does it matter!!!!!!!!!! its a mercury!!!!!!!!!YEAH!!!!!!!!............thats good though preppy.
i was just looking and all i found was 51/52 have those bullet things in the grill. i know a 49 Mercury has the horizontal bars........im thinking 7???? but im not 100% there
assuming it is a 3 speed. a 50 will have a column shift versus a 48 &49 have a floor shift. A 49 will have a V8 emblem front and centre of the hood (if so equipped)
Other then that got no idea what is what.
If there is anything of the Flat left and if you wana 302 I know someone who will take that old flattie off your hands.
That may be a plan snow, but if I get it i would yank whatever is in there out and put my 460 that is gonna hopefully be transformed into a 521 stroker. Thats why Im looking at buying it. And im sure it had a v8 emblem on the front.
Ok good cause I specialize in late flatheads 49-53. There was something different about the earlier ones.
Peppy that's a light tuck a 460 may be a bit much but I guess hey If you're standin on thin ice might as well DANCE!
1949/53 Flat Head V8's have 24 head studs, regular 'ol distributor, right where y'all can work on it..water pumps are relocated higher. Other difs, but you get the idea.
1948 and earlier Flatty V8's have 21 studs, and distributor is in "no man's land" ....down, down in the center recesses of the radiator..near the fan.
Those "good old days" I don't care to remember..changing the points was a b!tch!
