97 expedi engine cooling problem

this 97 expedi has a problem with coolant keep over flowing from recovery tank. i insalled new cap;changed thermostat;flushed and add new coolant. i am also noticing that there is no heat coming from heater vents. if driving vehicle or idling for a period of time - the temp guage shoots to hot all at once and oil light comes on,then engine start running terrible. stopping the engine to let cool down 3-4 minutes -when restarted it runs normal for a while. can anyone help me with this problem. thanks

Are you getting coolant in your oil? Blown head gasket maybe?

Your water pump is probably shot. Start the truck and let it warm up. Now grab the upper radiator hose (it will be hot!) and see if you can feel coolant flowing or if its even hot.

thank you for the response - I tried holding the upper radiator hose pinched and folded together while engine was running at operating temperature, there was no pronounce or force of pressure felt. do it suppose to build up pressure while holding the hose together. I PROBABLY NEED A WATER PUMP. thanks for the reply -
