Spare tire carrier bolts:
Ahem, -Shhhhh don't tell anyone. I always run a metal stem and point it down so I can check the pressure easy. Probably just waiting for some sort of disaster to befall me because I have violated the Ford God's rules...
I wish I knew why they specified for it to point up. maybe it has something to do with the rim offset. My rims always seemed to fit fine tho... Dono on that one.

Think about it for a bit guys. With the valve stem down, what do you have to spend ten minutes doing on the side of the road if you have to crawl under your truck and get that spare? Clean the mud and dirt out so you can mount the thing. Most of the guys still driving one of these trucks the comon sence to do this. For the rest of the idots out there Ford covers their back side so they can't be blamed when the wheel falls off.
(At least that is MHO)

Ah ok, that diagram will go into my 1980 and up only data then.
Glad someone posted the right one then.
I wish there were refference dates on each page of this stuff sometimes.

To be honest, I've been mounting the tire in the carrier backwards for years then. No ill effects yet. Knock on wood.

NumberDummy..
I called Green Sales back with the other part #, no luck. After talking with the guy he asked what this was for. I told him and he referenced the original part # 384581-S. I told him I checked earlier today and was told they didn't carry the part. He said "WRONG!", "We got a bunch of those". So I ordered 4, just to have spares. Cost about $3 each.
If you need this part or think you'll need this part get 'em while they're hot because all these parts are difficult to get.
Thanks for all your help.

Just get a 1 x 3 x 1/8" piece of steel. Drill/punch a 5/8" hole thru the center and weld a 1/2" nut on it. It works better and longer than the flimsy spring clip.

Nope, I just made the part in the shop then dropped it on top of the lower flange after I had coated it with grease. Just run the bolt up thru it. The plate keeps the nut from turning. The spring clip does the same thing on the OEM part. They use a spring clip on the production line for assy reasons. The thin spring clip holds dirt and salt all around it and rusts thru rapidly letting the nut spin which is then a devil to get off. Murphy's Law says it will twist off when it will be most inconvenient. -That is at night, with 3" of snow on the ground on a muddy gravel road while it is sleeting...
