05E15 Recall Issue....

California DMV requires that any registration renewal is accompanied by evidence that you've had any recall work done on your truck. I have an '04 crew cab Super Duty Turbo diesel with the 6.0. The truck has been running great. I do not like fixing things that ain't broke!
Took the truck in last week to the local dealer (who has a poor rep) to get the job done. Next closest Ford dealer is 40 miles away.
I did a search on this board and found that some people said the recall was no big deal, while others experienced issues.
Since the recall my gas mileage has dropped about 4mpg and when i turn off the ignition there is a whirring sound under the hood for about 20 seconds. Sounds like the fuel pump is running, if you ask me.
Of course I've got to call the dealer...but I'm wondering if any of you guys have any thoughts on this?
Thanks for your time...and thanks for this board...impressive!

Dave

It's the reflash... Not the recall for the EBP

I just got mine done the other day. No drop in fuel economy that I can see just yet.

Funny thing is... Why aren't service people telling truck owners about the new injector bleed down sequence when the engine is shut off?

My service manager told me this when I picked up the truck.

As for the mileage decrease, remember, those of you with automatics need to go through the computer re-learn shifting sequence. Depending on your driving, it could take a while. I would think that this could affect fuel economy for a bit.

Someone else will have to explain the re-learn process with the automatic transmission. I have a ZF6spd.

you may have other issues going on with your truck. 4mpg drop is kinda hard to believe being that the 05e15 flash does not change stuff drastically. be patient and see after a few tanks if the economy goes back up.

I didn't see a difference in fuel economy either after the new flash but I too have the 6 speed so tranny may not be involved. Dealer should have warned you about the new flash as mine warned me too.... 4 mpg does seem like a pretty drastic drop though.

I had the flash done to mine, and have noticed no real difference in fuel mileage. No difference in performance noticed either. It does start easier int he cold since the flash. I would drive a couple of tanks like the others have suggested and see if the mileage returns to normal. If not, don't take it back to where you had it worked on. Do yourself a favor and drive the 40 miles to the other dealership. If they are booked up and you need to make an appointment, they know what they are doing, hence the heavy workload. Good luck, remember its mechanical it can be fixed, it just takes the right hands working on it.

I think I've done about 600 million reflashes, and have had but one complaint about fuel economy.

The noise you are hearing after engine shut-down are the injectors running between 10 and 20 seconds. Your engine computer was altered at the dealer to do this; the intention is to clean the injectors. K80

30 seconds... It's done to try and purge left over oil out of the injectors to keep them from gumming up.

Guys...
My computer was down for about five days. otherwise i would have given you all thanks far earlier than this!
I truly appreciate the advice.
I'll take back my comments on the fuel mpg...seems to be about where it was before the procedure.
And...the injector "bleed down" makes sense...i'll just have to get used to it and if it's good for the injectors it's good for me!
Thanks again for all the good help.

Dave
