2001 Ranger running rough

My truck has been bulletproof since I got it, but after 115,000 miles it finally has its first problem.

On my way to work Tuesday, the truck started to sputter and hesitate a little, and quickly got worse and even got the "check engine" light flashing every few seconds. It was low on gas, but I filled up the tank and it made no difference. It did this to and from work, hesitating badly going uphill and would not go above 3,000 rpms, even when parked.

After I got home, I started checking everything and cleaned all electrical connections I could get to, cleaned the air filter, which was ok, lightly cleaned off the MAF sensor inside the air intake, checked the IAC valve, and the temp on both sides of the catalytic converter, and they were the same. I also put in a quality fuel system cleaner. Also since no place was open that could check the code for the "check engine" light, I reset it to clear the memory.

Since doing all that, the truck still has a problem, but it has changed. Now it still intermittently hesitates and runs rough, but only on an uphill of any kind, and now the "check gage" light flashes when it is running rough. It can also now go over 3,000 rpms, but still not when parked.

I am not sure where to go from here, but my guesses are a bad MAF sensor or a clogged fuel system, so any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I think there might be a rev limiter that prevents the engine from going above 3k rpm when in park or neutral. So that would explain that problem. My truck runs fine but it has never let me rev the engine above 3k rpm when in park or neutral. Am I correct on this? or is my truck messed up too?

yes ford has a retarded rev limiter on the rangers when there in park or neutral. at least on later model rangers, not shure when or why they started doing this

Red face

ok, I feel stupid then. I never tried revving it above 3,000 rpms when in park before so when I was checking it out and that happened I automatically thought it was part of the problem.

It does still hesitate when going uphill and the "check gage" light flashes.

Got it fixed.

FYI apparently worn out spark plugs can cause the "check gage" light, possibly because the plugs aren't getting enough spark, so maybe the computer "thought" the battery may be weak, but I am guessing. Just glad it is fixed.

Been working on the same type studder/shudder/sputter type problem with my ranger for a while. Checked everything I could think of with no appreiable difference. Since I had a valve job done in July, 06, I didn't worry too much about the valves. Nothing else seemed to make much difference - 2 sets of plugs/wires, EGR parts, etc., so i finally broke down and did a compression test. Results- 2 cyl. (#1 & 2) with low compression. One only has 60 lb (#1). Soon as I can get some more $$ to throw away, I'm going to pull the head and jump up and down at the machine shop. The valve job I had done, they had to machine some hardened seats into the head to replace the seats the valves beat up in the alum. head. The same 2 cyl. that were bad in the beginning are the ones with low compression now, so I'm thinking the hardened seats either shifted or one of them split. We'll see. I'm sure I'm going to get some song and dance from the shop.

Anyway, check your compression along with everything else.
