I have a E-150 VAN, 4.2 six it has run on 5cyls for over a year. Let me explain.....All of a sudden it started running badly, took it to Ford, they said I needed an engine, I fail to believe this, this was over a year ago.
I replaced Coil, Wires, Motorcraft Plugs, Injector, number 2 cyl does not fire so i get a rough jerking 35 to 50 mph. It rolls along fine at 65 mph.
I took it in to my mechanic a month ago. He said no leaks, vacuum or otherwise. Does not burn oil well mantained every 3 to 5 thousand, anti freeze is fine no loss. At a wits end. Possible push rod, rocker arm, but I think I would here something.
I need all your great minds for this. I do not want to nickle dime this from mechanic to mechanic. PS compression is 150 and all other cyl are good.
HELP ME

I kinda thought of that also, maybe a bad valve spring or a lifter, or even a push rod. Is it a real chore to remove the rocker cover for this. how much stuff I have to remove for this. Its been cold here so I haven't even popped the hood.
is it giving you a misfire code???? is so follow that code to the cylinder that is missing, you should be able to remove the valve covers from inside the van, just remove the dog house first. van are nice in that sense. hope this helps
Oh Yeah a misfire code cylinder 2 according to the meter at Auto Zone and that cyl the plug fails. I change the plug and it runs semi-decent for 3 weeks then it goes down hill after that. So I change that plug every 2 months for better gas mileage. Now if that makes any sense. But its time to change all of them now. I run them for a year.
sounds just like a busted valve spring to me. exactly what this one was doing too. take the valve cover off on that side and check it. its easy to change all you need is a fitting for the spark plug hole so that you can apply air pressure to that cylinder (to keep the valve closed) you will also need a valve spring compressor. compress the valve spring enough to get the keeper off and wham pull the old spring off and put the new one on. replace the keeper and take the pressure away from the cylinder. put it back together and there you go.
My experience on the 4.2L is this: If you can get a rebuilt one to run right GOOD LUCK!! I have a '97 F150 with the 4.2. I've replaced it twice in one week from pistons shattering to valve and lifter collape. The only way I see keeping them in shape is to staying om top of your mantenance.
I have not done anything yet. Still running on 5, I changed the plug last weeked and it was fouled badly. A guy told me those 1999 engines were CRAP and he can find me one from a 2000, 2001 and all I would have to do is change the exhaust manifolds and swap the intake. So, I am at at an impass here. Get a engine will 30,000 on it or get a rebuilt for 2300.00. I am gonna pull the cover off to see if its a valve spring or rocker arm. No milky oil, no anti-freeze loss, new plugs, coil, wires, no leaks.
That's a good idea. Check the rocker arm springs to see if there a any cracks or are broken. If you find milky oil, then you know you have a lower intake gasket issue. Also check push rods to see if any are bent or collapsed lifters. If you want another engine, go with you fried's suggestion a go to a 2000 or 2001 4.2L.
