I have a '71 f-100 with the 300 and i am finishing putting on the clifford intake, holley 390, comp 260h and a head with a valve job and port work. It starts and runs ok but it overheats. I have a larger radiator on it and with a new 195 thermostat it overheats so i took the thermostat out and it still over heats. I can see water runing when i take the cap off so the water pump works. Im stumped at what it could be. How close should the fan be to the rad and can a 300's head gasket be put on backwards and close off some of the coolant passages? Any help is appreciated thanks.
If you can see coolant circulating through the radiator then you don't have the head gasket on wrong. I dont think its possible to do it without noticing something is wrong. Is your gauge reading that it's over heating or can you actually tell it's running too hot? You might try hooking up a mechanical temp guage and seeing what your actual temp is. Factory guages are not the most accurate, it also might be getting a false reading due to a bad temp sender. I would try flushing the block to make sure you don't have a bunch of garbage buildup clogging the coolant passages in the block.
First off, put the Thermostat back in, tht way you avoid 'cavitating' which can cause a realy bad non-circulation problem of the water through the Block & Radiator.
Second off, do as P82 stated.
Third off, Cheque your Distributor Timing, as you could be running to Far Advanced for the Rebuild w/ all the new Performance Parts.
Fourth off, mount two 1200 CPU Electric Fans on your Radiator for Super Cooling purpasses, if the other suggestions do not pan out.

I have the timing set using the vacuum gauge so it is good. I took the thermostat out because it wasn't opening and i thought i might have an air pocket that would not let the thermostat open so i took it out to have constant flow during testing. Also i have another temp gauge hooked up that should be more accurate and thats what i've been using. I dont want to use electric fans and i shouldn't need them especially with the much larger radiator that i have. Thanks for the help and quick replies all help is appreciated
I've a 175* Thermostat, 4-core desert radiator & two 1200cpu electric fans, because of the space limitations not allowing the remounting of the original machanical fan.
My built, now 312 I-6, rarely leaves the "C" indicator on the gauge & I've to install a 195* thermostat so the coolent heats up enough to heat the Cab properly so we don't freeze this winter.
