I was always of the notion that in their 4x4 Rangers Ford only used 2 gear ratios (3.73 in 4x4 and 3.45 in 2wd), at least up to 92. No experience with newer models. However, I bought a 92 4.0L back in the summer that had 3.55, so obviously they have more than one, or did in 92. So, I'm wondering if they ever made anything with a 4.10 as well?
Someone with some factory literature could tell you more.
Here is what I can come up with:
1983-1988
6 3/4in Rears - 3.08, 3.45 ('83 and '84 2WD only)
7.5 Rears - 3.08, 3.45, 3.73, 4.10
8.8 Rears - 3.73 (Only '86-'88, Rare)
I bought a new ranger in 96, it was a regularcab, long bed 4x4, with the 4.0 and 5 speed manual. Didn't even think about the gears untill I got it home, Here it had 3:27's, what a sorry gear for a 4x4. I traded it for a 2000 ranger 4x4 and all I seen on the lot that were 4x4's had 4:10's. The same with my current 04 4x4, all the 4x4's were 4:10. I don't know if you can get another gear besides a 4:10 in a 4x4, but 4:10's are for sure the most common now. 4x4's should have 4:10's in my opinion.
