I was talking to my dad today and he told me some intresting news. He said that Caterpillar won't be producing engines in North America for 2007! He said that they have been trying to produce engines that are EPA compliant for a few years now and haven't been able to do it so they just paid the fine and kept producing the engines, but this year they failed again and refused to pay the fine so they (cat) were told that they cannot produce any engines this year. I searched for some news on this and couldn't find any. He is a part manager for the local bus company and they do deal with cat on a regular basis (tons of warranty and quality problems) so I would assume that his info would come from a good source, but I'm doubtful on this one. Anybody heard anything about this?
herman, come on the best manufactor of Diesel engines... Cat is so far ahead of everyone else they ought to have money given to them not fined. I got C-16 in my Peterbilt Cat couldn't make it emission friendly anymore so they made a C-15 that runs just as strong and is even more fuel friendly and better for the environment. The only company that problay has concerns on any and all sizes of Diesels are cummins.

nothing really important about cummins, however cummins and Detroit diesel has always been a little behind times and just like the their motors their talk is cheap also.
cat paid fines from 02 to 05 because they refused to spend money retrofitting their engines with egr like ddc and cec. in 05 they produced the acert engines which have compound turbos that do the same thing as egr but, better and they didn't restrict the life of their product. ddc lessened the length of their warranty on the series 60 with egr to 600,000 from 1,000,000 because the egr parts won't function properly after 600,000. A good friend has 2 new pete 379 ext hoods with 600 hp cat c-16's on order from rush truck centers, they'll be here at the end of febuary i'll let you know how he likes 'em. he loves his 05's same build.
the thing with cummins is they're hurtin in the heavy field because they haven't been able to produce a reliable 500 or more hp engine. the last decent engine they had was the n-14 and the big-cam.the newer isx is a 600 hp dual over head cam design with egr and is notorius for running away because it blows the oil seals in the turbo, dumps all the oil into the intake side of the air2air and thats all she wrote,it'll overrev till it runs the oil sump dry then it'll score every bearing in it and 7 outta 10 times it'll stick a rod though the block, translation=JUNK!!!!!!
detroit has the best user friendly computer system of any manufactuer but i guess they should seeings how your always working on 'em and anyone whoever has will hate their design like i do,but they still get some of the best fuel mileage on the heavy duty scene. Also you can't get a 600 horse ddc, they won't hold the power, translation=JUNK!!!!!
dt444e you gotta tell me about the name? I sold every 444 i owned when they introduced the 466 cause i got tired of building them.are you havin luck?now i'm not building the 466's but i'm goin through injectors like there's no tomorrow any tips?
yeah the 444 is an old dinosaur, however it works and holds its own. The 466 is a beautiful running motor, but anymore i'm about done with international accept for in pickups.
I ve been thinking of trying a ford with a cummins next, but if the money's there I think we'll look at a new pete 335-4 car with a cat c-13, but that's around $110,000 and for that I think i'll buy a new 6-9 car cottrell or sun valley, I don't know?
This is my 1st post ,although I've been lurking for many years. DDC Is the most technically advanced as far as engine management goes, they also produce the best fuel economy in over the road applications. The series 60 has been around in many forms for years and the MBE is even more proven although it has been in European and off road conditions, which vary from American Over the Road conditions. DDC and MBE are both the same system under different name and owned by Dahmler Chrysler. Both these engines are 2010 certified. The warranties on these is 500,000 for internal. Cat has 2007 spec and 2010 spec motors ready. The exhaust on these engines is actually cleaner than the air they intake in many major cities. Cats fines arose from a tailored program that was used in there cert motors. The program ran lean and injected air into the exhaust to clean up the readings. This was discovered and Cat ponied up and continued to sell its not cert motors knowing they had an Acert motor in the wings. It was cheaper to pay the fine than build a new engine for one year. The person that is waiting for a C-16 will be disapointed. Their is NO C-16 FOR ON ROAD APPLICATIONS. He could be getting a c-15 Acert rated at 625 horse. He is definatly not getting a c-16. Cat has a 2 year 200,000 top to bottom and a 500,000 internal. My MBE run over 7mpg, DDC run 6.5, Cats run 6.3. (they do it outfront though)
