Van quits running
2002 Ford E-350 7.3 Diesel. Yesterday I had to jump start the van. Last month had a new starter put on and batteries are only 9 months old. Alt. is only 1 year old. After jump starting van I drove it 540 miles to NJ. This morning it wouldn't start. I got a jump and it started right up but when I removed the jumper cables it quits. What could be the problem. Do you think the new starter could be shorting out and draining the batteries completely or could the batteries be bad already. The Alt. was charging just fine.

I would bet on a bad alternator (or broken wire on the alternator) if it dies when you remove the jumper cables. Try to jump it without the other vehicle running or with a jump box. Measure the voltage at the battery with it running. It should read 13.5 to 14.2 volts if your alternator is charging. If it reads less than that, then you need to look in that direction for sure. I don't know for sure on our PSD's, but on gassers, if you completly remove the battery with it running, the alternator will keep it running. I assume it is the same on a diesel.
